The 2016 BMW X5 has 5 recalls, with multiple fire risks among the most serious: certain diesel trims face an exhaust gas recirculation module that can melt the intake manifold and ignite a fire, and a separate wiring connector defect can cause an electrical short that also raises the risk of fire.
The diesel models have a third concern as well: the high-pressure fuel pump can fail while driving, cutting engine power and raising the risk of a crash. On the hybrid side, the xDrive40e trim has two electrical issues. A loose ground cable in the engine control unit can cause an under-voltage condition that drops the transmission into neutral without warning, which can lead to a crash. That same trim is also covered by the wiring connector recall that carries the fire risk.
