The 1999 Buell S3 Thunderbolt has 4 recalls, with equally serious concerns spanning the suspension, throttle, fuel system, and brakes, any one of which can lead to loss of control or fire.
The rear swingarm on some bikes was built outside of manufacturing specifications and can fail under load, potentially causing the rear suspension to collapse. The throttle system on certain motorcycles has a cable that can slip out of its guide, leaving the throttle stuck open when the rider lets go of the grip, meaning the engine keeps accelerating without input. On the fuel side, the fuel filter can leak, and any nearby ignition source such as a hot engine or electrical spark can cause a fire. The rear brake line is routed in a position where it can chafe or be pinched over time, losing brake fluid and leaving the rider with little or no rear braking.
