25 recalls across 20 model years
The Chevrolet Express has 25 recalls spanning the 2003 through 2026 model years, with the most serious recent issues including a 2026 steering column defect where the gear shifter gives inaccurate feedback about which gear is selected, risking unexpected vehicle movement, and a tire sidewall defect on 2025-2026 cutaway models that can cause sudden air loss and loss of control.
The 2025 model year also has two crash protection concerns: door impact beams on the driver's side may have faulty welds that reduce side-impact protection, and the front passenger seat head restraint may be improperly welded to the seat frame, reducing its effectiveness in a crash. On the 2022-2023 models, incorrect transmission control software can cause harsh shifting, sudden deceleration, rear wheel lockup, or the vehicle moving in an unintended direction. The 2021 model with the 6.6L gasoline engine has a positive battery cable that can contact a nearby fuse block post, short-circuit, and start a fire.
Going back through the mid-to-late 2010s, the 2016-2018 models with a single manual rear climate control module can develop an electrical short when the heat is at maximum, overheating the unit and risking a fire in the headliner. On 2016-2019 models, rear-quarter windows may be tempered rather than laminated glass, which increases ejection risk in a side impact or rollover. The 2014-2017 models with power windows can develop corrosion in the driver's window switch from liquid intrusion, raising fire risk. A tire pressure monitoring system on certain 2018 models is calibrated to the wrong threshold, so the low-pressure warning light triggers too late. Continental tires on 2018-2021 models can develop sidewall cracks or lose tread from overcuring during manufacturing. A backup camera monitor used on certain 2017-2019 models converted by Unicell can display a mirrored image, causing the driver to steer the wrong way when reversing.
The 2013 model year has an ignition that can allow the key to be removed while the vehicle is still running or not in Park, creating a rollaway risk. The 2011-2014 compressed natural gas (CNG) variants can leak natural gas from the high-pressure regulator, raising fire and explosion risk near any ignition source. An earlier group of 2011 CNG models with a four-tank configuration can vent compressed natural gas into the passenger compartment if the pressure relief vent pipe is incorrectly assembled. The 2010 model has a generator voltage regulator that can develop an internal short, generate heat, and start an engine compartment fire. On 2009-2018 models equipped with certain plastic-handle or push-button fire extinguishers, the extinguisher itself may fail to discharge properly in a fire.
Earlier production covers a handful of separate issues: 2008-2010 models converted with Braun wheelchair lifts can develop bent or misaligned roll stop latches that a wheelchair occupant can ride over. The 2003-2004 models, particularly those in salt-belt states, can develop severe corrosion in the fuel filler pipe that allows fuel to leak during refueling and catch fire near an ignition source.
