The 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander has 16 recalls, the most serious being a front lower control arm that can detach while driving, causing sudden loss of steering control and a high risk of a crash.
Two fire-related recalls involve an unused wiring harness connector sitting on the floorboard beneath the carpet on vehicles without power seats: the terminal can corrode, heat up, and melt, potentially starting a fire. The sunroof glass can detach from its assembly on vehicles equipped with that option, becoming a hazard for traffic behind the vehicle. On the steering side, a power steering pressure tube can rust through from contact with the transmission housing and leak fluid, making the steering heavy and difficult to control. A related recall covers vehicles that received a replacement 6-speed automatic transmission during service, where the same leak risk applies. Transfer case assemblies replaced during prior service work may have an oil seal that slips out of position, letting transmission fluid migrate into the transfer case and causing rough or failed shifting.
Wiper system problems form a cluster of their own: water draining from the windshield cowl area can corrode the wiper link ball joint until it separates or soak into the wiper motor and cause internal corrosion, leaving the driver with no wipers in wet conditions. The brake light switch can also malfunction on certain vehicles equipped with LED stop lamps, leaving the brake lights dark when the pedal is pressed and giving no warning to drivers behind.
