The 2010 BMW 3 Series has 4 recalls, the most serious involving fire risks from two separate sources: an overheating cooling fan motor and a crankcase ventilation valve heater that can short and ignite, both capable of starting an engine compartment fire while driving or shortly after parking.
The cooling fan fire risk applies only to vehicles where an aftermarket Valeo replacement fan was installed, while the ventilation valve issue affects certain 328i and 328xi trims. On diesel-equipped models, the positive battery cable connection to the fuse box can fail while driving, cutting power to the electrical system and causing the engine to stall along with the loss of lights and other vehicle systems. There is also an engine concern across several trims: bolts in the VANOS variable valve timing unit can come loose or break, which can cause the engine to stall unexpectedly.
