1991 BMW 5 Series

The 1991 BMW 5 Series has 3 recalls, the most serious being throttle valves that can stick open, preventing the engine from decelerating properly when the driver lifts off the gas pedal.

Two separate throttle issues affect different trims. On 525i and 525iA models, cold weather can cause the throttle valve to bind in the housing and stay open rather than returning to idle. On 535i and 535iA models, a loose throttle shaft nut can similarly impair valve movement and cause the engine to keep pulling even after the driver releases the accelerator, with loss of control possible in either case. On M5 models, wheel cover mounting screws may not have been fully tightened and can work loose over time, shedding pieces onto the road and creating a hazard for other drivers.
