The 2004 BMW 7 Series has 5 recalls, the most serious involving a faulty engine management computer that can cause the engine to stall and refuse to restart, while also disabling power steering and brake assist.
Two recalls affect vehicles with optional equipment. On cars with the Comfort Access option, pressing the start-stop button rapidly can leave the transmission in Neutral instead of Park, and if the driver exits without setting the parking brake the car can roll away. On vehicles equipped with both Soft Close Automatic doors and Comfort Access, the doors may not latch fully, and an unbelted occupant could fall out if a door opens while moving. On the restraint side, a faulty driver's seat occupancy sensor can fail to detect that the driver's seat is occupied, which may prevent the front airbag, head protection system, knee airbag, and seatbelt pretensioner from deploying in a crash. There is also a brake system concern: a leaking check valve in the brake vacuum pump can allow oil to contaminate the brake booster over time, reducing or eliminating power-assisted braking.
