The 1998 BMW K1200RS has 3 recalls, the most serious being two separate fire and loss-of-control risks: a fuel tank that can develop a gap at the fuel pump gasket in high heat and leak fuel, and an oil thermostat housing cover that can detach and drain the entire engine oil supply rapidly.

The fuel leak creates a fire risk any time the motorcycle is ridden in hot weather. The oil thermostat cover issue is separate: a retaining snap ring that was not fully seated can allow the cover to work loose and fall away, letting all engine oil escape within a short time and leaving the engine without lubrication. There is also a coolant-related concern: sealing plugs near the spark plug area of the cylinder head may not be fully seated, and if one or both detach while riding, coolant can spill out, run along the engine cover, and reach the rear tire, reducing traction.
