The 2004 BMW X5 has 6 recalls, the most serious being an engine management defect on 3.0L manual transmission models where the engine can surge unexpectedly while moving slowly in first gear with the clutch partially engaged, raising the risk of a crash.
Two of the recalls describe the same fuel system problem: an in-tank fuel line that may have been attached incorrectly can loosen during driving, cutting off fuel transfer between the two chambers of the fuel tank. The engine can then stall even when the fuel gauge shows fuel remaining, which can create a hazard depending on road and traffic conditions. On the drivetrain side, two recalls cover the same underlying issue: bolts securing the front differential, the right output shaft housing flange, and the right-hand engine support may not have been tightened to the correct torque. Over time these fasteners can work loose and damage the engine and transmission housings.
