2003 BMW X5

The 2003 BMW X5 has 4 recalls, the most serious being a driver's airbag inflator that can rupture in a crash and send metal fragments into the cabin, posing a serious injury risk to the driver and passengers.

The airbag concern appears across multiple filings covering overlapping model years and trims, but the underlying defect is the same: the driver's frontal airbag inflator can fail violently during deployment rather than inflating the bag as intended. Both the X5 3.0i and 4.4i are covered, and prior repair attempts may not have fully resolved the issue for all affected vehicles.

The remaining two recalls describe the same brake line problem, filed in two jurisdictions. On certain vehicles, the brake line runs too close to the steering shaft's cardan joint, and over time the contact between the two can wear and corrode the line. If the line is breached, brake fluid leaks out, a warning light appears on the dashboard, and front braking power drops noticeably, raising the risk of a crash.
