The 2009 BMW X5 has 17 recalls, the most serious being frontal airbag inflator defects on both the driver and passenger sides where the inflator can rupture and send metal fragments into the cabin, causing serious injury or death.
Prior repair attempts did not fully resolve the airbag issue across all affected vehicles, which is why multiple campaigns exist for this problem. On the fuel system side, diesel xDrive35d models have a fuel filter heater that can stay on after the ignition is off, draining the battery and potentially overheating to the point of causing a fire. Certain gasoline models have a fuel pump wiring connector that can loosen, melt, and leak fuel, or cause the pump to fail and stall the engine. The positive crankcase ventilation valve heater can also short circuit and melt surrounding components even while the vehicle is parked. Diesel models carry two additional concerns: the engine belt idler pulley bolt can loosen and break, causing a sudden loss of power steering assist, and the rear brake discs may be out of specification and can crack, reducing braking at the affected wheel.
