The 2015 Indian Chieftain has 4 recalls, the most serious involving both a rear brake master cylinder that can lose braking power and a gear position switch that can falsely show neutral while the bike is in gear, either of which can lead to a crash.

On the electrical side, a corroded gear position switch contact can cause the display to show neutral when the transmission is actually in gear, so starting the engine can send the motorcycle moving unexpectedly. There is also a risk of fire: an engine misfire can push unburned fuel through the exhaust system, raising exhaust temperatures to the point where ignition becomes possible. The fourth recall involves the vehicle control module's electrical connection, which can fail and cut power to the front lights including the headlight, leaving the rider without forward illumination.
