2018 Indian Chieftain Recalls & Complaints

The 2018 Indian Chieftain has 4 recalls, the most serious involving a gear position switch that can display neutral when the bike is actually in gear, causing it to lurch forward unexpectedly when started.

Two recalls affect lighting. A software or electrical connection fault in the vehicle control module can cut power to the front lights entirely, leaving the rider without a headlight. Separately, some motorcycles may have been fitted with a European-market headlight assembly that does not meet US output standards, reducing how well the bike is seen by other drivers. There is also a second recall tied to the gear position switch defect: if the motorcycle starts unintentionally while parked in an enclosed space, carbon monoxide can build up to dangerous levels.
