2018 Indian Chieftain

The 2018 Indian Chieftain has 4 recalls, the most serious involving a gear position switch that can show neutral on the display when the bike is actually in gear, causing it to lurch forward when started.

Two other recalls also affect lighting and visibility. A software or electrical connection failure in the vehicle control module can cut power to the front lights entirely, including the headlight, leaving the rider without any forward illumination while riding at night or in low-light conditions. Some motorcycles may also have been fitted with a European-market halogen headlight assembly instead of the correct US-market unit, which produces a different light pattern and can reduce how well other drivers see the motorcycle or how far the rider can see ahead. On the unintended starting issue, there is a related concern: if the gear position switch malfunction causes the bike to start while parked in a garage or other enclosed space, the engine running unattended can raise carbon monoxide levels to a dangerous concentration.
