A second urgent concern involves the rear suspension: the U-bolts that clamp the rear axle to the leaf springs can work loose, allowing the axle to shift out of alignment. Related to the rear axle, the locking bolts that secure the left rear wheel bearing hub can be loose, allowing the wheel assembly to shift outward on the axle. This reduces braking force at that corner and can compromise steering control. On the frame side, burrs left on the transmission crossmember during stamping can break the studs that hold the transmission in place. Once those studs fail, the transmission loses its mounting support and may not shift properly, creating an unpredictable loss of drive power.
Two recalls cover the onboard fire extinguisher: the unit supplied with these trucks may fail to discharge when activated, leaving the driver without a tool to fight a cab or engine fire in an emergency. On the labeling side, certain trucks with the 5.2-liter diesel engine carry tire and load information placards printed in a way that owners may not be able to read or correctly interpret, which could lead to underinflated tires or an overloaded truck.
