The 2017 Isuzu NPR HD has 5 recalls, the most serious involving wheel and axle fasteners that can loosen and cause a rear wheel to separate from the moving vehicle.
Two of these recalls involve rear wheel retention: lug nuts on the rear outer wheels may not have been fully tightened at the factory and can work loose until the wheel detaches, and the left rear wheel bearing hub locking bolts can also be insufficiently tight, allowing the wheel assembly to shift outward on the axle, reducing braking performance and directional control. A related chassis concern involves the U-bolts that clamp the rear axle to the leaf springs, which can loosen and let the axle shift out of alignment, potentially causing the driveshaft to separate and the truck to stall or become uncontrollable. On the structural side, burrs left on the transmission crossmember during manufacturing can break the studs holding the transmission in place, making it difficult or impossible to shift gears. There is also a recall covering the onboard fire extinguisher, which may not function when needed.
