The 2011 Suzuki Grand Vitara has 3 recalls, the most serious involving the alternator drive belt and manual transmission, either of which can contribute to a crash by forcing heavier steering, stalling the engine, or leaving the driver unable to change gears.
The drive belt recall applies only to 4-cylinder models produced before October 17, 2010. If the belt slips off, power steering assist cuts out and the engine can stall, both of which raise the risk of losing control. On manual transmission models, the gear shift rear shaft can break, trapping the transmission in whatever gear it was in and making the vehicle difficult to control in traffic. There is also a safety equipment concern: the front passenger leather seat can shrink in high heat and humidity, causing the sensor mat under the seat cushion to misread who is sitting there. In a crash, that misreading can cause the front passenger airbag to deploy toward a child who should not receive a full-force deployment.
