The brake light may flash instead of remain steady during emergency braking. With the ignition key in the run or start positions, and the hazard lights turned on, the spoiler mounted centre high mounted stop lamp is activated at a reduced intensity without depressing the brake pedal. In addition, under these same circumstances, the brake-shift interlock can be circumvented.

On certain vehicles, a wiring problem could cause the left-rear tail lamp and/or turn signal not to work.

A tail lamp that doesn't work could make the vehicle less visible to others. A turn signal that doesn't work could cause a person not to recognize when a driver intends to turn or change lanes. Both issues could increase the risk of a crash.
