On certain trucks equipped with a Caterpillar C7 diesel engine, the number 5 and 6 fuel lines may crack at the fastening point to the common fuel rail, causing a high pressure fuel leak. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire causing property damage and/or personal injury.
Certain vehicles may not meet the requirements of the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 301 - Fuel System Integrity. After a rear impact crash test during a compliance testing program, the post crash fuel spillage exceeded the limit specified by the standard. Should fuel leakage occur and be in close proximity to an ignition source it could result in a fire.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will install a protector to the gasoline recirculation tube at the filler neck connection.
On certain vehicles, the sender unit within the fuel tank could become stuck, causing the fuel gauge to display a greater quantity of fuel than that which is actually remaining in the tank. As a result, if the tank were to become empty, engine stalling could occur which, in conjunction with traffic, road conditions, and driver's reactions, could increases the risk of a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the fuel level sender with a revised version.
On certain vehicles equipped with a 5.0L engine, the in-tank electric fuel pump may not be correctly activated following a vehicle start-up cycle. The engine may start and continue to operate as normal until the engine fuel demand exceeds the ability for the pump to supply sufficient fuel. The engine can then cut out without warning. Loss of propulsion, in conjunction with traffic and road conditions, and the driver's reactions, could increase the risk of a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury.
Certain vehicles may not meet the requirements of the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 301 - Fuel System Integrity. After a rear impact crash test, during a Federal compliance testing program, the post crash fuel spillage exceeded the limit specified by the Standard.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will install a new protector component for the fuel filler inlet pipe.
On certain vehicles, stress generated by fuel movement inside the fuel tank during acceleration, and accompanied by vertical vibration, could cause detachment of spot welds holding the fuel pump support inside the fuel tank. A fuel leak could develop at the detached spot weld, which could, in the presence of a heat source or an ignition source, result in a fire causing property damage, personal injury or death.
On certain vehicles, a manufacturing defect may exist in the fuel pressure line, which may result in a fuel smell and/or fuel seepage. Since the fuel line is working under constant pressure, seepage may occur within a short period of time and eventually develop in a greater fuel leak. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could lead to a fire causing property damage, personal injury or death.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the pressure fuel line.
On certain vehicles, the molded fuel tanks are slightly thinner than specification in the area under the fuel sender unit. This may allow the tank floor to deform causing the fuel sender float to interfere with other features inside the tank. This could cause the instrument panel fuel gauge to show a fuel level of approximately one quarter tank when the fuel tank is empty. An inaccurate fuel gauge can lead to engine stalling while driving, which may increase the risk of a crash causing property damage, personal injury or death.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Letters will be sent to owners in two stages. The first letter will advise owners of fuel gauge inaccuracy and recommend maintaining a fuel level above the one half position. The second letter will follow, requesting owners bring their vehicles to a dealer for replacement of the fuel sender unit.
On certain vehicles, the material used on fuel level sending unit contacts can wear and contaminate the sender. This causes the instrument panel fuel gauge to display that the vehicle still has some fuel left in the tank when the fuel tank is empty. An inaccurate fuel gauge can lead to engine stalling while driving, which may increase the risk of a crash causing property damage, personal injury or death.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.

Certain vehicles, operated in areas where road salts are frequently used in winter, may be exposed to road debris (mud) mixed with road salt. This material can become trapped between a reinforcing bracket and the fuel filler pipe, potentially causing corrosion. Over time, corrosion could create a leak in the fuel filler pipe that could result in fuel leakage when fueling the vehicle. This situation may result in a fire causing property damage, personal injury or death.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the fuel filler pipe and associated parts with new, improved parts.
On certain vehicles, a fuel seepage could occur between the metal line and the rubber hose during cold starts at very low temperatures. Should a fuel leak develop, it will increase the risk of a fire causing property damage, personal injury or death.
On certain vehicles, the fuel line rail cover that protects the fuel lines under the car, may not be properly attached. If the cover is not properly secured the fuel lines may become exposed and may become damaged. Damaged fuel lines may result in a fuel leak causing fire, personal injury or death.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, reattach the fuel line rail.
On certain motorcycles, the fuel tank front mounts may distort in reaction to severe frame damage from a frontal collision. This may result in a fuel leak. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire, causing property damage, personal injury or death.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will install fuel tank front mount braces.
On certain vehicles, fuel line quick connectors - located under the vehicle away from the engine compartment - may not have been connected properly during vehicle assembly. A partial dislocation of the quick connector could cause a fuel leak. Fuel leakage could result in a vehicle fire causing property damage, personal injury or death.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect the connection of the fuel line quick connectors and install a new retaining clamp.
On certain vehicles, should the hose clamp used to fasten the water sleeve to the thermostat housing be incorrectly installed during a service repair, the clamp could contact and damage nearby fuel supply pipes. Fuel leakage could result in a vehicle fire causing property damage, personal injury or death.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will install a fuel divider block, which will serve to provide greater distance between the fuel lines and the hose clamp.
On certain vehicles, the fuel transfer pipe in the fuel tank assembly may have been kinked or over inserted into the fuel delivery module during fuel tank assembly. This could cause the vehicle to experience fuel starvation whilst indicating the presence of approximately ¼ tank of fuel on the fuel gauge. Engine stalling would result in lost propulsion which, in conjunction with traffic and road conditions, and the driver's reactions, could increase the risk of a crash.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will remove the fuel transfer pipe from the fuel delivery module, reduce the length of the pipe by 6 inches (150mm) and discard the excess pipe. The fuel transfer pipe will then be inserted into an alternative hole on top of the fuel delivery module to prevent over insertion and the tank re-assembled.
On certain Audi A3 Quattro, TT Quattro and TT Quattro roadster, the closing force of an internal spring of the fuel tank ventilation valve is not adequate enough to hold the valve closed under extreme conditions. During certain driving manoeuvres, liquid fuel may enter the fuel tank venting system and migrate into the evaporative system, saturating the carbon canister. Should this occur while driving, the vehicle may experience performance issues (i.e. vehicle jerking) and the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) in the instrument cluster could illuminate. In certain instances, fuel could leak from the evaporative system leak detection pump filter. A fuel leak, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a vehicle fire causing property damage, personal injury or death.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the fuel tank ventilation valve with an improved version.
On certain motorcycles, a fuel hose may become disconnected from the fuel pump assembly. Any loss of fuel pressure would cause engine stalling which, in conjunction with traffic and road conditions, and the rider's reactions, could increase the risk of a crash.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and, if required, replace and reposition the fuel hose retaining clamp.
On certain motorcycles, the fuel pump control unit may be subject to water intrusion which, in time, will cause it to fail. Engine stalling would result in lost propulsion which, in conjunction with traffic and road conditions, and the rider's reactions, could increase the risk of a crash.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the fuel pump control unit.
On certain vehicles, the fuel return pipe may develop stress cracking, under certain conditions, allowing a fuel leak to occur. Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire causing property damage, personal injury or death.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the fuel return pipe and install two additional pipe brackets.
