VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: CLASS 8 HEAVY DUTY, AXLE BACK MODEL VEHICLES. THE DESIGN OF THE LOWER STEERING COLUMN SHAFT UNIVERSAL JOINT BOOT COULD ALLOW THE BOOT TO GET ENTANGLED IN THE UNIVERSAL JOINT.
Safety Risk
THIS CAN CAUSE INCREASED STEERING EFFORT, CREATING A POTENTIAL FOR STEERING LOCK-UP.
Remedy
OWNERS WILL BE ADVISED TO REMOVE THE UNIVERSAL JOINT BOOT PER INSTRUCTIONS. IF AN OWNER CHOOSES, A VOLVO TRUCK DEALER CAN PERFORM THE REMEDY FOR THEM. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MARCH 27, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT VOLVO TRUCKS AT 1-800-528-6586.
On certain vehicles, improper heat treatment of the front hub assemblies may allow the development of a circumferential crack on the roll formed end of the hub when vehicle loading is applied. This condition can result in axial movement of the wheel, causing front end noise and steering wheel shudder, and the potential for wheel detachment and/or loss of steering control resulting in a crash.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and, if required, replace the front hub assemblies.

ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES,THE OUTER TIE ROD BALL JOINT CAN DEFORM AT HIGH LOADS CAUSING A LOSS OF THE CLAMPING FORCE AND THE NUT MAY LOOSEN, WHICH MAY EVENTUALLY LEAD TO A FATIGUE FRACTURE OF THE OUTER TIE ROD BALL JOINT.
Safety Risk
THE DRIVER MAY NOTICE THAT THE VEHICLE IS DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Remedy
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE OUTER BALL JOINT TIE RODS WITH IMPROVED OUTER BALL JOINT TIE RODS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 23, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT VOLVO AT 1-800-458-1552.
On certain vehicles, the steering column intermediate shaft universal joint connection may have been improperly assembled or insufficiently tightened. A loose or improperly tightened connection may produce noise or a steering feel which is loose or unresponsive. If these signals were to go undetected or no action was taken by the driver, a separation of the joint could result, leading to a loss of ability to steer the front wheels and increasing the risk of a crash.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, tighten steering column u-joint bolts to specs.

On certain vehicles, the nut that attaches the steering wheel assembly to the steering column may be upside down in the steering wheel assembly. This could overstress the steering column shaft when the nut is tightened. In addition, the nut may have been cracked during manufacture, which could result in the nut fracturing when it is tightened during vehicle assembly. Either of these conditions could potentially lead to the steering wheel becoming loose or separating from the steering column. This could result in loss of steering control and a crash without prior warning.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and replace the steering wheel retention armature an, if necessary, the steering column will be replaced.

THE TIE ROD ATTACHING BOLTS ON THESE VEHICLES MAY FAIL DUE TO UNDER TORQUING CAUSING SEPARATION OF THE TIE ROD ARM FROM THE STEER AXLE SPINDLE. THIS COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND A CRASH WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
VEHICLES WILL BE INSPECTED AND ATTACHING BOLTS REPLACED. TIE ROD ARMS AND SPINDLES WILL BE REPLACED AS APPROPRIATE.

THE STEERING COLUMN LOWER PINCH BOLT MAY NOT HAVE BEEN TORQUED TO SPECIFICATION. THIS COULD RESULT IN RATTLE AND LOOSENESS IN THE STEERING SYSTEM. IF THE PINCH BOLT WERE BACKED OUT OF THE JOINT COMPLETELY, ROTATION OF THE STEERING SHAFT AGAINST THE CONNECTOR IN HIGH EFFORT STEERING MANEUVERS COULD CAUSE INCREASING LOOSENESS IN THE STEERING SYSTEM AND COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF STEERING AND A CRASH.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
STEERING COLUMN PINCH BOLT WILL BE INSPECTED AND IF NECESSARY TIGHTENED TO SPECIFIED TORQUE.

ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE LOWER STEERING COLUMN SHAFT COUPLING MAY HAVE BEEN INSTALLED ONTO THE INPUT SHAFT OF THE STEERING RACK WITH TOO MUCH CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE BOTTOM OF THE COUPLING AND THE STEERING RACK INPUT SHAFT HOUSING.
Safety Risk
AS A RESULT, THE LOWER STEERING COLUMN SHAFT COUPLING COULD SEPARATE FROM THE INPUT SHAFT OF THE STEERING RACK, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Remedy
DEALERS WILL ADJUST, IF NECESSARY, THE CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE LOWER STEERING COLUMN SHAFT COUPLING AND THE STEERING RACK INPUT SHAFT HOUSING, AND RE-TIGHTEN THE COUPLING LOCKING BOLT. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN APRIL 1, 2002. On certain vehicles, the steering gear housing cover screw may have been manufactured out of specification and the axial tension between the screw and gear housing may deteriorate over time. This could allow the screw to gradually loosen, which will cause the steering wheel to exhibit noticeable looseness from the steering assembly. If the vehicle continues to be driven in this condition, the screw may eventually come out of the steering gear housing. If large steering inputs are made with the cover screw missing, the pinion shaft may come out of the steering gear. This may result in a loss of steering control, which could lead to a crash causing property damage, personal injury or death.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect whether the steering gear cover screw is loose. If it is loose, it will be retightened to the proper specification. In addition, the dealer will install a cover plate to prevent the screw from possibly coming out of the steering gear.
