On certain cars, the airbag system may not turn off the airbag when a child seat is used in the front passenger seat. In the event of a crash with an airbag deployment, this could create a risk of injury to a child.

On certain vehicles, a problem with the passenger occupant detection system can cause illumination of the airbag warning light and the airbag system may not properly classify the front passenger. In the event of a crash, the airbag system may not function properly, increasing the risk of injury to a front passenger.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will install a passenger occupant detection system repair kit.
On certain vehicles, the side curtain airbags may not unfold properly during deployment. This could increase the risk of injury to an occupant in the event of a side-impact or rollover crash.
On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, could eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger frontal airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. These issues could increase the risk of injury.

No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the passenger frontal airbag inflator.

On certain vehicles, the driver frontal airbag could explode if the vehicle is involved in a collision that warrants an airbag deployment. If this occurs, sharp metal fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, which would increase the risk of injury.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the driver frontal airbag inflator.
On certain gasoline and hybrid engine vehicles, the circuits within the airbag control unit may become damaged. This could cause the airbags and seat belt pretensioners to not deploy in certain collisions where deployment is warranted, which could increase the risk of injury to vehicle occupants.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will install a wire harness kit between the ACU connector and vehicle harness connector as necessary.
On certain vehicles, the passenger frontal airbag may not unfold properly or could tear during deployment, which would increase the risk of injury to the seat occupant.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the passenger frontal airbag.
On certain vehicles, the Sensing Diagnostic Module (SDM), which controls the airbag system, may not shut down correctly when the vehicle is turned off. If this happens, the SDM may not work when the vehicle is started, making it unable to detect a crash or deploy the airbags, and increasing the risk of injury in a crash.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will reprogram the SDM with updated software to correct this problem.

Update - October 21, 2024: This parts recovery campaign was re-opened and its scope expanded.
Hyundai Auto Canada is conducting a parts recovery campaign targeting 2009 Elantra and Elantra Touring vehicles built between January 15 and April 15, 2009. Owners of subject vehicles will be notified by mail and the driver frontal airbag module will be replaced at no charge. The parts are being recovered to aid in Hyundai's analysis in support of Transport Canada defect investigation file no. 3280-38-18.
Note: No safety defect has been identified with these vehicles and this action is not being conducted under the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
On certain vehicles, the passenger frontal airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure during airbag deployment. Increased pressure may cause the inflator to rupture, which could allow fragments to be propelled toward vehicle occupants, increasing the risk of injury. This could also damage the airbag module, which could prevent proper deployment. Failure of the passenger airbag to fully deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant.

Remedy
Dealers will replace the passenger side frontal airbag inflator with a new, non-ammonium-nitrate-based inflator.

On certain vehicles, the rear connection point from the side curtain air bags to the air bag inflators could disengage during deployment. If this occurs, the effectiveness of the side curtain air bags could be reduced, which would increase the risk of injury to the occupants.

Note: A subset of 2006 B-Series (vehicles built from August 18, 2005 through November 3, 2005) may pose a higher risk of driver side airbag rupture than other recalled airbags. These vehicles are being recalled separately due to high risk under campaign 2218A. <a href=https://www.mazda.ca/en/owners/recalls/>Click here to determine if your vehicle is affected</a>. Vehicles subject to 2218A should not be driven - Contact a Mazda dealer immediately to have the vehicle repaired.<br><br>
