On certain vehicles, a clip on the shifter mechanism inside the console may become dislodged preventing indication of the correct gear under conditions of darkness. Also, the clip could bind part of the shifter mechanism in a way which would prevent the gear detents from operating; hence an inadvertent bump of the shifter could place the shifter in an undesired gear position.
