MERCEDES-BENZ IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 1999-2002 M-CLASS AND MODEL YEAR 2000-2003 M-CLASS AMG VEHICLES. THE CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM IN THE AFFECTED VEHICLES ALLOWS THE DRIVER TO DISENGAGE THE SYSTEM IN A NUMBER OF WAYS, INCLUDING TAPPING THE BRAKE PEDAL, USING THE CRUISE CONTROL STALK, OR BRAKING THE VEHICLE ENOUGH TO REACH A CERTAIN RATE OF DECELERATION. MERCEDES-BENZ HAS DETERMINED THAT UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES USE OF THE BRAKE PEDAL MAY NOT AUTOMATICALLY DISENGAGE CRUISE CONTROL AS EXPECTED BY THE DRIVER, ALTHOUGH THE OTHER MEANS OF DEACTIVATING CRUISE CONTROL REMAIN FULLY OPERATIVE. SPECIFICALLY, WHERE THE DRIVER PUMPS THE BRAKES RATHER THAN APPLYING CONSISTENT PEDAL FORCE, THE LEVEL OF FORCE REQUIRED MAY BE UNUSUALLY HIGH.
Safety Risk
DIFFICULTY OR DELAY IN DISENGAGING CRUISE CONTROL CAN INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Remedy
DEALERS WILL REPAIR THE VEHICLES FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN DURING OCTOBER 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MERCEDES-BENZ AT 1-800-367-6372.

Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will reprogram the ESC module with updated software.

On certain vehicles, a relay within the electric power steering control module could short circuit and fail. The sudden loss of steering power assist would trigger a warning lamp to illuminate and a buzzer to sound. A vehicle experiencing a loss of steering power assist would revert to a manual steering mode which would require greater driver effort, especially at low vehicle speeds. A loss of steering power assist could ultimately result in a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the electric power steering control module with an updated version.

On certain vehicles, spilled liquid seeping through the console opening for the parking brake lever could contaminate the airbag control module connector that is located under the center console. This could result in an airbag Warning Light illumination. Should the owner decide not have the airbag system serviced at the time, it may affect the driver & passenger frontal airbags and prevent airbag deployment during a crash. Non-deployment of the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) airbags increases the risk of personal injuries or death in certain crash conditions.
Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
Dealers will install a protective cover over the airbag control module connector.

Safety Risk
No risk description available.
Remedy
