Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2011-2013 Ford Explorer vehicles manufactured May 17, 2010, through February 28, 2012. The affected vehicles may experience an intermittent connection in the electric power steering gear, which can cause a loss of the motor position sensor signal resulting in a shut down of the power steering assist.

If the vehicle experiences a loss of power steering assist it will require extra steering effort at lower speeds, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
Remedy
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) software, free of charge. If a vehicle shows a history of a loss of motor position sensor signal when the vehicle is brought in for the recall remedy, its steering rack assembly will be replaced, free of charge. Certain vehicles do not comply with the requirements of CMVSS 135. To meet the Standard, the vehicle must not move for five minutes when stopped on a steep hill with the parking brake applied and the vehicle in NEUTRAL (N). A part that was not manufactured to specifications can cause the parking brake to fail this test. A loud popping noise as the parking brake is applied or a sudden decrease in the effort required to apply the parking brake can be indications of this condition. When the parking brake is released, the driver may notice unintended braking when accelerating, decelerating, or coasting, and a groan, humming, and/or vibration coming from the rear of the vehicle.

On certain vehicles, water could leak into the trunk causing the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) to short circuit. If this happens, the tail lamps may not work, the rearview camera may not work, and/or the rear seat backrests could fold on their own.

A short circuit could create the risk of a fire. Tail lamps that don't work could make a vehicle less visible, and cause a following driver not to recognize that the vehicle is braking or intends to turn. A rearview camera image that does not display correctly could reduce a driver's ability to see behind the vehicle while backing up. These issues could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, a backrest that folds on its own could increase the risk of injury.

Remedy
DVUSA will notify owners, and dealers will upgrade the chassis by replacing the stabilizer bar on the front axle and replacing shock absorbers and installing a stabilizer bar on the rear axle, free of charge.
